Four households, all alike in sloppiness,
In some strange place, where we lay our scene,
From ancient sloth break to new idleness,
That burns their souls and makes their minds unclear.
They own a store that now becomes their burden.
Some live there, others stay there as their guests.
As a result, the place is almost burned,
The tenants quarrel, life becomes a mess.
They want to sell or lose at cards their woe –
The property. Their strivings to redeem
And run to Finland or to Moscow,
Is now the few hours’ traffic of our film;
The which if you with patient ears attend,
What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.
